Is a Seychelles-Regulated Broker Safe? What the License Covers

What the Seychelles license covers, what protection it offers your capital, and what signs to check beyond registration: segregated accounts, negative balance, and external audit.

Seychelles appears in the footer of many brokers that serve Brazil, and the question is always the same: does this protect my money? The honest answer is "partly, and it depends on what else the broker offers".

What Seychelles regulation is

The financial authority in Seychelles licenses brokers that operate internationally. To maintain the license, the company must meet minimum capital requirements, submit audited financial statements, follow anti-money laundering rules, and keep client money separate from the company's own funds.

It is a real framework, with verifiable obligations. But it is lighter than those of jurisdictions such as the United Kingdom or Australia, and that is the main point to understand.

What the license covers, and what it does not cover

The license covers: the requirement for segregated accounts, periodic audits, the obligation to identify clients, and a formal complaint channel.

The license does not cover: a compensation fund in the event of broker bankruptcy, like the one that exists in the United Kingdom. If the company fails, recovery depends on whether segregation was complied with and on the local legal process.

The four signs that matter more than the license

Segregated accounts

Client money is held in a separate account, at a top-tier bank, without being mixed with the broker's operating funds. It is the most concrete protection available: if the company has financial problems, your capital is not part of the estate.

Negative balance protection

In a violent move, a leveraged position can close below zero, and without this protection you owe the broker money. With it, your maximum loss is what you deposited.

External audit

Verification by an independent auditor, on a defined schedule. This is what turns the promise of segregation into a fact that can be checked by a third party.

Public documentation

Terms, execution policy, withdrawal policy, and risk disclosure published and accessible. A broker that hides the contract is saying something about the contract.

How to verify it yourself

  • Look for the registration number in the footer and confirm it with the licensing authority.
  • Check whether the legal name in the registration is the same one that appears in the contract.
  • Read the risk disclosure: it should talk about loss, not profit.
  • Test support before depositing a meaningful amount.
  • Make a small withdrawal right at the beginning, to learn the process.
